What is a pen blank
All pens start out as a blank, the sizes vary but most are anywhere from 1/2 inch square to 1 inch square and approximately 5 inches long. Some are round with about the same dimensions.
About Eagle
A few years ago my phone rang and when I answered it the person on the other end said in a gruff voice "this is Eagle! is this Roy?" So began a long distance friendship with the person recognized through-out the pen making world as the best pen blank maker around. He called because he saw one of my pens and wanted to talk pens. Over the years we would talk at least twice a week and E-mails would fly between us and about another 8-10 pen makers. Through Eagle I met these other pen makers and I became close friends with them and Eagle.
Eagle was one of a kind, he never held back what was on his mind and if he liked you and felt comfortable with you, you were able to converse (argue) with him about just anything in the world. Eagle was either loved by the pen makers of the world or misunderstood to the point that folks would argue about him. I was fortunate to be one of his friends.
How Eagle made his blanks
What made Eagle the artist he was , was because his artistic abilities were not hampered because of his not having the finest of machinery, he made do with very basic tools . His inlay work was so precise that at times we all shook our collective heads in wonderment.
If asked how did you do that Eagle would snicker then say "attempt it yourself and show me what you've done and then I'll give you hints on how to do it." He wanted you to learn by doing and he would help you along the way.
Eagle took his last flight on July 4th 2008
We miss you my friend!
